It’s funny how circumstances can change in an instant. From dealing with heartbreak and anger when the cause of that heartbreak not only gets a job at your school but also moves in across the street.

For months, I’ve been fighting with Noah Weston and fighting with my feelings for him. I was willing to let the anger not only fester but spread throughout my entire body. It was starting to affect my life in ways I hadn’t expected, but in a moment in time, another car running into mine shifted my entire world.

I was distracted that day, so focused on getting away from Noah that I didn’t pay attention. And right before everything happened, all I wanted was the one person I was running away from.

“What are you thinking about?” he asks as he pulls his car to the front of my house. He lifts my hand and kisses it, and I’m brought back to our time together. I don’t think I paid much attention to it then, but now I’m reminded of how he would kiss my hand at every opportunity.

“Just how life can change in an instant.” He steps out of the car and walks around to my side and helps me out. Then he presses me against the door and looks into my eyes. Neither one of us speaks, and I drown in those green eyes. Those are the same eyes I’d look into when we made love, or while we talked while naked in each other’s arms.

“Life changed for me the day I saw you walking through the parking lot in our old apartment complex. It happened again when the car hit me and robbed us of years together, and it happened again today because you’re giving me another chance. I’m not going to waste a single moment, Li.” He kisses the top of my nose, intertwines our fingers, and walks the few steps to my house.

My trembling hands causes me to drop my keys twice before finally getting the screen door open. I can hear his heavy breathing behind me as I try to open the door into the house. I drop the keys again when we step inside, and Noah has to pick them up for me.

“Here it is,” I announce, sweeping my hand inside the space. It’s just a typical single-story, small house, but it’s open and clean. I toss my keys on the coffee table and turn to look at him. “And remember, we’re taking things slow. Three years is a long time, Noah. We’re not the same people anymore. We might find out that we’re no longer compatible and that—” He silences me with a kiss so deep that I momentarily forget my name.

“Mm-hmm.” I hear myself moan in his mouth, but neither of us attempts to stop the kiss. I undo his messy bun and stick both hands in his hair. I don’t know which one of us moans this time, and I don’t protest when he unbuttons my jacket. But I do protest when I have to move my hands from his hair so he can take the jacket off.
